Hakuna Matata: The Audience Evolution Of The Lion King
As one of the biggest films of the year The Lion King has already passed the $1 billion mark and is on the verge of becoming the top grossing animated movie of all time. In our latest Audience Evolution Report, we examine the audience from pre-release ticket sales and across the movie’s run from opening night into the third weekend. Some key insights:
- The Lion King was definitely an event title to be seen with family and friends. Almost 90% of visits had at least 2 tickets purchased; a trend that remained consistent throughout the film’s release cycle thus far.
- The title played particularly well with those who would have been able to see the original as a child, moviegoers under 50 have made up the majority of The Lion King audience since release, with 50+ moviegoers coming in later in the release cycle.
- Continuing a theme seen in other blockbuster titles, The Lion King brought out infrequent and occasional moviegoers in droves. The overall audience so far is nearly 70% occasional and infrequent moviegoers which is 12% percentage points more than the average title audience.
